Why this app exists

None of the major language apps offer Albanian. Duolingo, Mondly, Drops, Gus on the Go and Studycat have neither standard Albanian nor Gheg.

At the same time, very few children of Albanian heritage in the diaspora receive instruction in the language. Around 5 per cent receive Albanian lessons, which is roughly 25,000 pupils across 19 countries.

Provision exists, but only in a few places.

The alternative to the app is therefore rarely another app. It is a Saturday school the family has to drive to, in a town that may not have one.

About the numbers

That Duolingo, Mondly, Drops, Gus on the Go and Studycat do not offer Albanian was checked against the providers’ own course lists on 10 August 2026. We are not aware of any app that teaches Gheg, but we have only checked the five largest providers and cannot rule it out.

That 5 % of diaspora children receive Albanian instruction — 25,000 pupils across 19 countries — comes from Radio Evropa e Lirë, April 2019.

What the app is

  • Gheg, not the schoolbook

    The Albanian is Kosovar Gheg — the way the family speaks, not the way the schoolbook writes.

  • Offline

    All words, pictures and audio clips are included from the first launch. Nothing is downloaded during use, and the app works without coverage.

  • Six ways to practise

    Cards to get to know the word. Quizzes in two directions, picture → word and word → picture, the two that count towards a medal. Dëgjo, a listening mode for children who do not read yet. “Say it out loud”, where the child has to pronounce the word. And spelling.

  • The mission of the day

    One little mission a day happens away from the screen: say something in Albanian to somebody at home. Nobody checks it.

  • Honest progress

    A medal requires 70 % correct in both counting quiz directions, while pure guessing averages 55 %. Behind a parental gate there is a progress report showing what the child knows, what has not stuck yet, and how long it has been since the last practice.

  • On paper

    Word cards, a word list and a diploma can be printed directly from the app, with no server and no subscription. The printouts are designed for Saturday schools with little equipment.

The app has 999 words, 186 sentences and 1216 recordings. The demo shows content from the free tier.

Ten categories free forever

The free tier contains 180 words, 126 sentences, the whole alphabet, medals, review and the mission of the day. It requires no account, shows no adverts and has no time limit.

This is not a trial period. Categories outside the free tier do not appear in the child’s interface, so there are no padlocks, no prices and nothing to nag about. Section 20 of the Norwegian Marketing Control Act forbids purchase appeals directed at children, and the app is built more strictly than the law requires.

The medals, the XP and the streak belong to the child. They stay whatever happens to the subscription.

Privacy, in plain words

  • No adverts. Ever.
  • No third-party tracking and no analytics tools.
  • The free tier has no account at all. A nickname is plenty — we never ask for the child’s full name, email or date of birth.
  • Without an account nothing leaves this device. With an account it is your email, the nickname and the progress that sit on a server in the EU (Frankfurt) — never the code, never the child’s full name.
  • The narrating voice is computer-generated speech (Microsoft Azure), not a person.

The app is finished, but it has not been submitted to the App Store and Google Play yet. Leave your email address and we will send a single email when it is available. This is not a newsletter.

The address is used for that one message only. We run no sign-up server. The button opens your own email client with a prepared message, so you can see exactly what is sent and to whom. The lawful basis for the processing is your own request, GDPR Article 6(1)(f). The address is deleted once the message has been sent, and no later than 12 months after you signed up. You can ask to be removed from the list at any time.

You can also write to [email protected] with the word “notify” in the subject line. The result is the same.
